Apple hummus stackers make one protein-packed snack, appetizer, or post-workout treat that’s ready in one simple step, with just 3-ingredients: apples, hummus, and cheddar cheese!
I don’t know what it is about the non-glamour, no-fuss, simple-looking food. It always goes over well with my kids! That should be an ah-ha moment for those of us that think our kids need cookie cutter designed meals [not knocking those who that works for]. I think it’s just a reminder for ME that my kids like the basics. Or at least they did this week when I served up these apple hummus stackers.
When I was asked to participate in the celebration of National Hummus Day [officially recognized on May 13th] with Sabra hummus, I had a hard time thinking of an elaborate recipe that a. would please my toddlers and b. seem fancy enough for the blog. Then I got to thinking: that’s not what this blog is about. I’m about real, simple foods and recipes. And you know what? SO is Sabra! I think this no-brainer, stackable snack is just what both of us wanted for National Hummus Day— which is pretty much every day in my house. I often give a spoonful or two of hummus alongside new foods [which helps prompt my toddlers to dip and scoop that new food in the hummus] or give them a ½ cup with a few crackers for a simple lunch! But today I’m sharing one of our new favorite snacks with these apple hummus stackers.
We always have the 3 components to this recipe in fridge; put them all together and you have an “unofficial meal” that’s perfect for post-nap, post-school, or pre-activities when you need an energy boost! The best part is you can customize the apples, cheese, AND hummus based on your family’s favorite combination. I like using gala apples, cheddar cheese, and Sabra’s classic hummus. But if I was serving this snack to a girlfriend or two, I might use Sabra’s roasted garlic or pine nut hummus. Seriously, the combinations are endless!
- 1-1½ cups Sabra Classic Hummus
- 3 oz. cheddar cheese, cut into ¼-inch slices
- 1 large Gala apple, cut into 18-20 slices
- Top each apple slice with a tablespoon of hummus and then a slice of cheddar cheese. Serve immediately. Or store in your refrigerator until ready to enjoy.
While Gala apples, cheddar cheese, and traditional hummus is my favorite combo, I’m guessing there are plenty of other flavor combinations you can play with, depending on your family’s preference!
Thanks again to Sabra for giving me those endless options when I’m serving up unofficial meals and snacks for my hungry, hungry toddlers!
