Back to School COVID Style

Sep 3, 2020 2 Comments

Back to school COVID style means one thing: masks, social distancing, and new rules and precautions for some cute little rule-breakers. Yep, it was the first week of school for the Serbinski’s and despite Michael thinking he could walk right into 5th grade, I’ll have to admit things went swimmingly for our Four Tops.

Have a great school year! I know these 4 are ready to learn, eat, and have fun!

Our family has been a part of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs catholic school and community since before Joey was born, so it’s truly a home away from home for the kids. From the email communication this summer to COVID safety precautions to back to school night via Zoom, the OLQM community has truly done an amazing job at this whole back to school thing despite what is happening outside the school doors.

The night before the big first day. Jets Pizza and cheers from the crew!

Some first week notables:

  • Joey is in first grade, and a class with ALL BOYS. God bless Mrs. Tucker, his teacher. That’s all that needs to be said there.
  • Anthony is in kindergarten and already has 2 girls fighting over who gets to be his girlfriend. Typical Anthony!
  • Lily is an official preschooler and loves that she gets to have the same teacher as last year, Mrs. Emerick. Sister puts on her masks and power-walks into the school like the boss she is! That girl is going places…
  • Michael yells, “ME,” from the car when his big siblings get out for drop-off. He also yells, “ME,” when he realizes we get home and he has some special time with Mom. Apparently it’s all about Michael and the smart cookie knows it…
Our first week of school also included the last few days the pool is open. A bittersweet end to summer!

I don’t know what it is about this year [maybe it’s our home life changes, the kids wearing a mask and having to walk into school without me, or perhaps the fact that I’m actually SOBER and PRESENT to be the best Mom I can be to our kids], I’m emotional and so dang proud of these kids. They are kind, loving, AND resilient. Determined too! Knocking on wood that school doesn’t get cancelled and we get sent home for virtual learning. These kids are thriving- and happy! Did I just jinx myself??

Nothing makes me happier than packing the night before the school day. This picture more so much than just school. It reminds I can and am doing this for my children!

Oh, and despite what I told you about the Pina Colada smoothie and Back to School Breakfast Boxes, we rushed out the door and had Danimals and Pirates Booty for breakfast. Note to self: set the alarm 15 minutes earlier for school breakfast. Mom even learned a thing or two this first week!

Here’s a happy and healthy school year for all of our learners… in-person or at home!

Note to self: Let Dad know what kind of breakfast bars the kids like. He will stock you up on his next Cosco Run. You are amazing.
