Family & Friend Support During Pregnancy

October 17, 2014 By Katie

At the end of each week, I usually go through my iPhone to see what I’ve taken pictures of, what pictures need to be deleted (selfies) and what pictures need to be saved and printed. This week’s photos had a definite theme: support. Specifically support from family and friends during a very trying 30 weeks of my second pregnancy….

So here’s the scoop: For the past week, I have been having lower pelvic pain- most noticeable when walking > 1/4 mile. I was also feeling the same pelvic pain whenever I bent over to clean, carry Joey, or do whatever else needed to be done while hunchback. My doctor advised me to come in for a checkup, which turned into a few hours of stress tests and an ultrasound— happening over a span of two days. The real kicker? Ted was out of town for work! As much as I appreciated his listening ear and calming words via phone and text, we both knew I needed some help. In came the reinforcements…

Each one of these ladies (and boy) has played a major role in supporting myself, Ted, and/or Joey during this pregnancy (and actually during Joey’s too!). From babysitting Joey to listening to my fears (or bloopers) in the doctor’s office, there’s nothing like a having a girlfriend you can count on! There’s a few more that have been instrumental this week—> one being co-founder and friend, Nuny, over at Foodie Babies! Our daily texts more often than not get me through the day!

The best carrot cake I’ve ever eaten!! Secret ingredient: shredded coconut!

One of those lovely ladies also sent me a piece of homemade carrot cake. YUM! She sure knows me and baby #2. Loving all things sugar and spice…

Hey Nana, let me try on those glasses!

As much as I miss our life in California (friends, food, and jobs), I can’t imagine raising Joey without the support of my immediate family (and extended- thanks to technology and travel!). After the doctor visits, my parents suggested that Joey and I take a break from reality and stay with them for a few days at their cottage. Joey was able to spend some quality time with Nana and Grandpa while Mom was able to put her feet up— and spend some QT with them too! I cherish the memories I have with my Grandparents and I know our boys will feel the same with all 4 of theirs.

More photos from our R&R with the Grandparents. I forgot to mention Joey had some fun TV dinners with the dogs too!

One thing I’ve learned as a Mom of one and soon to be two is that Mom’s are sometimes plagued with the “we can do it all” curse. But when you are tired and sore and a little human being is depending on you for EVERYTHING, sometimes taking help from family and friends can give you the re-boot your Mommy tank needs to REALLY feel invincible. Even if you do not live near family or friends and are expecting a little one or taking care of a few already, you can still feel this same love and support from other social circles: coworkers, neighbors, fellow church parishioners. Just don’t forget to say “yes” when the opportunity for help arises. You can’t do it all! And you’ll likely be offering that same helping hand when their time comes.

And this one says it all… sometimes a good nap while someone else drives the car is all you need to recharge!
