I was texting with a friend who has also recently had a baby and we exchanged the usual, “how are things going?!” I replied with, “things are ok during the day except I have this internal discussion of whether or not I should shower or nap when the kids are sleeping.” Want to know her response? “Ahhhh, yep, the great motherhood debate!” I have no idea why I’m just realizing this conundrum in my own life. Chances are it’s because Joey and Anthony were fall and winter babies and we didn’t really leave the house much when the boys were newborns. But that’s not the case with my summer baby. The boys want to hit the parks in the morning and by afternoon I’m due for a shower AND a nap, because Momma is just as tired as the kids! And sweaty too… I’m carrying a newborn and pushing a double stroller. Hello baby boot camp!
I took an uninterrupted, LONG, hot shower recently [lucky me my in-laws were in town] and like all great ideas and memories, this post about showering vs. napping came to me in the shower of all places. I started thinking about what my internal discussions or debates were pre-baby. This was a fun one to think about—- and goes to show you what else about Mom changes with motherhood! If anything, I hope you get a good chuckle out of this and relive some old memories too. And I pray you are showered. And perhaps just woke up from a nap. Please tell me one of us is that lucky!
5th grade: Who is my celebrity crush, Darren McCarty or Steve Yzerman?! The question I asked myself when I was thinking about my favorite Detroit Red Wings hockey player and perhaps the man of my dreams. Apparently I was into broken teeth and slap shots!
9th grade: Can I handle playing both soccer or basketball?! The question I asked myself when I decided which sport I wanted to focus on in high school. Thank goodness I chose soccer because I couldn’t make a free throw to save my life!
Sophomore year of college: Dietetics or human biology?! The question that kept me up at night when deciding what my major would be at Michigan State University. I’m so glad I chose the path to become a registered dietitian! My parents are too. Because I pretty much cried my entire sophomore year trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my life!!! I was and am somewhat of a drama queen…
Post graduate school after becoming a registered dietitian: Take a job with the state of Michigan or move to California to pursue a relationship with my now husband?! [and yes, I had no job lined up]. Glad I chose to move to California!!!
Shower or nap: There’s no question… honestly, right now I’m doing more napping than showering. Ok let me take that back. I’m doing ½ showers [not always washing my hair]. In my defense, ask any hair stylists and they’ll tell you that’s ok! Actually beneficial for most hair types. So I’ve got that going for me. Plus, if you know my post shower hair routine you know I’m a stickler for blow drying and rollers.
What will my question of the day be in 5 years?! Who knows. Probably what’s for dinner? Carry out or freezer pizza. Because from what I gather from parents with kids in school it’s that life gets even busier. I just hope I have time for both a shower AND a nap!

It is the great question. 🙂 I usually choose the nap and shower when hubby gets home. It gets so much easier past 6 months. The firsr six it can be hard to get those showers in, at least for me. 🙂
