I find it very ironic [or self-torturous] to be writing a post about calories in holiday drinks when I’m pregnant and not enjoying any of these beverages myself! Two more weeks, two more weeks… Anyhow, those of us in the health professional community often talk about healthier holiday foods or keeping calories in check when at holiday parties this time of year. From dips to desserts, calories can add up quickly- even if you find yourself at a party for less than 2 hours! Along with the food, it’s easy to indulge in holiday drinks—- Chevy Chase anyone!?

You can certainly enjoy a cocktail or two at a holiday party without feeling weighed down- or judged by the jealous pregnant girl [mwuah]. Here’s how:
Alternate alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks to save calories.
Once you finish one cocktail, glass of wine or beer, consider having a “mocktail,” a nonalcoholic, zero-calorie beverage (like sparkling water with a lime) that looks like the real thing. This strategy not only reduces the risk of over-consuming calories and alcohol, but it also helps you stay hydrated so your head will thank you in the morning.
Choose wine, light beer, or simple cocktails made with minimal or low-calorie mixers.
Dilute or mix your drink with club soda, water, or low-calorie juices. Fruit and vegetable juices can be good choices because they are lower in calories than some other mixers and also contain antioxidants.
Set a holiday drinks limit or goal before you go to the party.
Of course the pregnant registered dietitian suggests if you are that concerned about keeping calories in check at a holiday party, then avoid alcohol all together. Misery loves company. OR, better yet, educate yourself on some lower-calories options and strategies to enjoy a drink or two without feeling guilty.
Let’s take a look at some popular seasonal choices for alcoholic beverages:

And because I’m feeling generous and hoping for a champagne toast once baby is born, here is a champagne cocktail recipe that is worth the calories!

- 4-6 pomegranate seeds
- 4 ounces of champagne, chilled
- 1 tablespoon of cranberry juice, lower-calorie option if available
- Grab a fancy champagne flute and place pomegranate seeds on the bottom of the glass.
- Add champagne then cranberry juice. Enjoy immediately!
