This easy green smoothie recipe requires just five ingredients and is extra creamy and nutritious with the addition of Hass Avocados!

Some of the most memorable family traditions in our house revolve around food. Whether that be Sunday dinner, pizza night, and morning smoothie time. It’s not breakfast around here without the sound of the blender buzzing, the boys singing their “smoothie cup” song, and Dad talking to the boys about each ingredient that makes their green smoothie perfect. Every. Morning. While I’d prefer my smoothie post coffee, the boys look forward to this special time with Dad as soon as they pop out of bed! “Smoothie Daddy, smoothie!” They aren’t as patient as I’m making them out to be here. Beyond the consistency [toddlers are creatures of habit] and 1:1 time with their Daddy, there’s a nutritious reason as to why I’m a fan of their morning green smoothie: Hass avocados!

When the boys aren’t eating avocados in a green smoothie, I often serve them up as a side at mealtime, and even used them as a first-food when I transitioned the boys onto solids. Hass avocados make the perfect first-food for babies [continuing into toddler-hood] because of the soft, smooth texture, and they have a low to moderate sweet and salty flavor profile, helping prevent those early preferences for sweet foods. Avocados are also higher in key developmental nutrients than other fruits— such as folate, monounsaturated fats, fiber, and vitamins E and C to name a few.
You can find me joining in the green smoothie fun a few mornings a week too because I know the naturally good monounsaturated fats in the avocados help with my breastmilk quality and formation, and are sending some of those same brain-boosting fats straight to Lily in my breastmilk. And when I was pregnant with Lily I added those same avocados to sandwiches, wraps, and egg scrambles at least once a day, because of the critical nutrients avocados contain for fetal and infant health and development.
So whether you are waking up to a simple green smoothie or looking for a healthy fat to add to taco night, a baked potato, or a packable lunch, then I’d suggest you throw in a few slices of Hass avocado! And if my boys haven’t sold you on “smoothie time” just yet, then you’ve gotta try this recipe. They’ll make you a green smoothie believer!
- 1 Hass Avocado, pitted
- 1 banana, peeled
- 2 cups fresh spinach
- ½ cup vanilla Greek yogurt
- 1 ½ cups 2% milk
- Add ingredients to high speed blender. Puree until thick and creamy.
- Serve immediately.
