Kids Eat Right Month

August 1, 2014 By Katie

To highlight the role parents, educators, health professionals and government official’s play in ensuring a healthy future for children, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has declared August as Kids Eat Right Month. Kids Eat Right Month will focus on the important of healthful eating and physical activity for children. As a registered dietitian and Mom, I’m thrilled! Yes, I love National Apple Pie Month and other nationally celebrated food holidays. But this one hits close to home- both personally and professionally.

Personally: I’m raising a healthy eater! Or in the process of doing so… it’s not that easy. 3/4 of this healthy food misses his mouth!

Professionally, I’m sharing my passion for motherhood + food with a best friend through a project called Foodie Babies. Check out our Instagram page (now has 2300 followers) and website, www.foodiebabies.co.

What I pledge to do during Kids Eat Right Month:

  • Share the Kids Eat Right message (and materials) with various mom groups that I participate in
  • Share the Kids Eat Right message (and materials) on my blog and the Foodie Babies blog for our followers
  • Set goals for physical activity as a family! We love to walk after dinner (Mom, Dad, and Baby Joey). It will be our goal to do this 4 nights per week.
  • Plan weekly meals with my husband. I’d love to do this with our son too but he’s 10 months old and isn’t too particular yet.
  • Limit our dining out. When we eat homemade meals we not only save $, but we end up eating a little healthier!

Mom thinks I’m not particular… little does she know I’m running this kitchen!

To help celebrate Kids Eat Right Month, the Academy has developed materials for every audience willing to participate. These materials are FREE and can be found on the Kids Eat Right website.

How about you? What do you think of this campaign and how will you celebrate with your family or in your profession?
