The Unseen Work of Motherhood (And Why You’re Not Alone)

May 30, 2025 By Katie

There are jobs I never knew existed until I became a mom.

Like remembering everyone’s shoe sizes. Or mentally tracking which kid likes their sandwich cut in triangles, not squares. Or knowing which laundry pile contains the favorite sweatshirt that must be worn tomorrow.

Then there are the deeper, quieter jobs—emotional air traffic controller, peace negotiator, master scheduler, and midnight worrier.
Motherhood is made up of a thousand unseen tasks. Some are small and repetitive. Others are huge and heavy. Most go unnoticed… unless you’re the one doing them.

Yes, I feel like I’m doing it all. Yes, I love this, them, everything about our day to day [usually once that day has passed].
Lately, I’ve been feeling the weight of them all.

May is beautiful… and also bananas.

Between teacher appreciation week, end-of-year concerts, sports practice, field days, and figuring out how your kids grew out of all their summer clothes overnight—this month can feel like a never-ending to-do list with glitter and sunscreen on top.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, behind, or like you’re the only mom who forgot it was pajama day (again)… let me stop you right there:
You are not alone.

This season of motherhood is full—of love, of chaos, of calendars that make your head spin. And while we often show up with smiles and snacks, many of us are carrying invisible loads behind the scenes. This post is your permission slip to pause, breathe, and know that it’s OK if you’re not nailing every detail. You’re not the only one just trying to keep up.

I don’t have any real solution for making May a little less bananas for you or for me. Although I have tried my best to leave email untouched after bedtime, keep active with 10-20 minutes of exercise ALONE each day, and, well, I’ve really tried to just stay in the day. You know that infamous recovery saying, “one day at a time.”

4 kids @ a Detroit Tigers game?! Gwen Stefani had me singing, “this shi* is bananas, b a n a n a s.”

If you’re in this stage too, hear me out:
💛 You’re not alone.
💛 You’re not lazy.
💛 You’re carrying way more than people realize.

Motherhood is a team sport. But so many of us are trying to play every position, every day.

This school year we are ending with a Kindergarten Graduation for Big Mac. How is it possible my littlest love bug is 6, going into first grade, and almost too heavy to carry anymore?!

So this is your reminder:
You’re doing sacred work.
You deserve rest.
And cereal for dinner counts as a win.
We’re all juggling flaming batons while trying to raise decent humans. Let’s give ourselves (and each other) a little more grace.
