What could be better than a simple bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado wrap [BLTA wrap]?! Layered in a Flatout Flatbread this sandwich makes for the easiest lunch!
I know I sound like a broken record when I say this or have repeatedly said it in other posts, but my healthy eating philosophy is simple. There are zero fancy ingredients. Just fresh, sometimes processed foods, and a whole lot of variety. Now variety is something that scares the heck out of my husband and toddlers. Mom says variety and they think I’m going to feed them something unrecognizable. So when I DO introduce a new food or way of eating something [i.e. think different ingredients in their favorites like mushrooms in marinara sauce], I have to be strategic. And considerate. Because there’s only going SO far in that department. And one strategy that seems to work in getting my guys to accept new foods is to eat it right in front of them. And that’s exactly what Momma did with this BLTA [bacon lettuce tomato avocado] wrap.
Do the boys like Flatout Flatbread? You know it. It’s pretty much our go-to carbohydrate or canvas for grilled cheese or flatbread pizzas. Our favorite is the Multi-Grain but we also get the Protein-Up for Ted who is more conscious on the amount of protein he eats everyday. Do they like avocado? Yep! We eat them in our smoothies or as a side for many meals. Bacon? We don’t call Anthony the sausage king for no reason! But tomato and lettuce? Well, those two are questionable. Even for Ted depending on the meal! So when we were making lunch one day [correction, I was making lunch for the troops], I started assembling the BLTA wrap. And talking about ingredients, munching on a few pieces of bacon, and talking about their favorites like Flatout.
What happened next? Ted ate some of the extra bacon on the side and assembled his own BLA [he’s not a fresh tomato fan in “chunks” like I had cut them]. And the boys kept running up to Mom asking for more bites of MY sandwich. See how that works? I’m not sure they would’ve been so apt to trying this BLTA wrap if it were plated for them. But the fact that I was enjoying it in front of them and open to sharing made a difference. And if you haven’t added avocado to a BLT then I highly suggest you do. Your kids will thank me!
- 1 Flatout Flatbread
- ¼ cup lettuce, chopped
- 4 cherry tomatoes, halved
- ¼- ½ avocado, sliced thin
- 2 slices of bacon, cooked
- Optional: Ranch dressing or mayonnaise
- Layer ingredients on your favorite Flatout Flatbread and roll. Cut in half and enjoy!
Moral of the story? Keep trying when it comes to getting kids to accept new or previously introduced fruits and vegetables. And when all else fails be super obnoxious when eating them in front of your kids. Chances are they’ll want in the fun and ask for a bite or two! I’m guilty of eating BLTs with all the ingredients served separately. And no tomato. In that way, have hope for your toddlers because most days I can still rock “adulting.” Most days 😉
