Let me be clear here. Hummus doesn’t necessarily need doctoring. It’s tasty on it’s own with a chip or veggie dipper, as a spread on a sandwich, or heck, just plain licked off a spoon! But if you’re celebrating the end of a school day with hungry kids or the end of a work week with a happy hour at your house, doctored up hummus is a must. Believe me, once you doctor up store bought hummus with one of these variations you’ll thank me! Or my toddler. He’s always the inspiration as to why I’m doctoring up different foods.
I would have liked to have prepped each hummus variation according to the doctor’s orders, but I was working on this post during nap time and needed to eat and clean my mess before the boys woke up!
Let’s start with the base: the hummus. I have never made my own hummus despite how easy it seems. I’m a big fan of Sabra store bought hummus and so are my taste testers, Joey and Ted. Why change a good thing if the whole family is well-fed and happy?
Doctored Up Hummus 4 Ways:
#1. Cucumbers and Tomatoes. Rough Chop. Spread over the hummus. Got it? Good!
#2. My favorite: Pine Nuts and Garlic! Mince 3 cloves of garlic and sautee [with olive oil] with the pine nuts for 8-10 minutes over medium heat. Spread over the hummus and serve warm!
#3. Tabbouleh. I bought this at the store too! Apparently it’s also easy to make but I’m short on time— refer to my baby-wearing, hummus eating, messy hair picture!
#4. Olives and Feta. You guessed it! This one is store bought too. I perused the olive bar at my local Kroger and chose my favorite olive mix. Feel free to choose [or make] what you’d like! The flavor combination of green olives, feta, and hummus = just what the doctor ordered!
For dipping, I love Stacy’s Pita Chips and found this garlicky parmesan chip, which added an extra zing to my dipping!
If you’ve ever doctored-up hummus I’d love to hear the food and flavor combination that is your favorite!
